Monty Williams is a professional basketball coach and former player who is the head coach for the Phoenix Suns of the National Basketball Association (NBA).

Early Life

Williams was born on October 8, 1971, in Fredericksburg, Virginia. As a small forward, he played college basketball for the University of Notre Dame from 1990 to 1994, where he was a three-time All-Big East selection and helped lead the Fighting Irish to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight in 1994.

NBA Career

After going undrafted in the 1994 NBA draft, Williams began his professional career in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) with the Rapid City Thrillers. In 1996, he signed with the New York Knicks of the NBA, appearing in 10 games before being waived. He went on to play for the Philadelphia 76ers, Denver Nuggets, San Antonio Spurs, and Orlando Magic, averaging 6.3 points and 2.8 rebounds per game over nine seasons.

Coaching Career

Upon retiring as a player, Williams became an assistant coach with the Portland Trail Blazers in 2005. He spent five seasons with the Blazers before joining the Oklahoma City Thunder as an assistant coach in 2010. In 2013, he was named the head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans, where he led the team to the playoffs in his second season. Williams was fired by the Pelicans in 2015, but he was hired as the head coach of the Phoenix Suns in 2019.
