Starliner Calypso Set to Undock and Return to Earth Without CFT Crew

Unmanned Flight Returns Critical Data

After a successful mission to the International Space Station, Boeing's Starliner Calypso spacecraft is scheduled to undock and return to Earth on July 26th, 2023. However, the spacecraft will be returning without its intended crew of astronauts due to a technical issue.

The uncrewed flight was part of a critical test mission (CFT) ahead of the first crewed Starliner flight. During the mission, the spacecraft successfully docked with the ISS and delivered supplies. However, a software issue prevented the spacecraft from being able to perform a safe departure from the station.

Boeing and NASA to Assess Software Issue

Boeing and NASA are working to identify and fix the software issue that prevented the spacecraft from departing the ISS as planned. The issue relates to the spacecraft's propulsion system, which is crucial for maneuvering and re-entry. The spacecraft's propulsion system was already set to use a different software version than the one that failed during the unmanned flight for its next crewed mission. The software upgrade is already completed, and the necessary hardware has already been installed. (Source)

The uncrewed flight of the Starliner Calypso has still provided valuable data for Boeing and NASA. The mission demonstrated the spacecraft's ability to dock with the ISS, deliver supplies, and perform other vital functions. The data collected during the flight will help Boeing and NASA to improve the spacecraft's design and systems.

Despite the setback, Boeing and NASA remain committed to the Starliner program. The next crewed Starliner flight is still scheduled to take place by the Crew Flight Test in May 2023.
